Our Programs

All BurstTutors Coaches are trained in the MindGym approach which includes our own strategies of Academic Mindfulness Training, Motivational Coaching, MindGym Movement Strategies, and Organizational Training & Support, and other subject-area coaching approaches. These strategies have been developed by our team, led by Dr. Troy Wathen whose areas of expertise include motivational and attentional training of adolescents. Dr. Wathen has also taught in K-12 schools and led three elite private schools in Texas and California.

Dr. Troy Wathen

Dr. Wathen is a graduate of Westmont College (BA in Econ/Business), Asusa Pacific (Masters of Education) and Biola University (Doctor of Education). His primary focus in the last five years has been in the development of BurstTutors and our MindGym approach.

The MindGym approach

It combines research-based activities, specific movements that foster cross-hemispheric (in the brain) stimulation, and academic mindfulness training.

When these three complementary activities are combined, students are more engaged in learning and far more effective.

Organizational Training

Rates range from $30 to $125/hour based on Burst Coach assigned

Is your child gifted in interpersonal communication, but a little scattered when it comes to getting assignments into their planner? Maybe she needs an approach to organization that fits her area of strength. We, at BurstTutors, believe in tailoring our strategies to the gifts and weaknesses of our clients. This is not a one-size-fits-all approach to organizational trai ning. Your child will not have to fit into a Type-A tutor’s organizational style, but will learn how to minimize the challenges and maximize their strengths to become organized. Our goal? Help your child experience success and enjoy the positive emotional payoff of that success.

Organizational Accountability

Rates range from $15 to $85/hour based on needs

Executive function is that part of our mental capacity that enables us to organize and prioritize. Executives in the workplace hire executive assistants to support this function so those executives can focus on important matters. Your adolescent may need just such an assistant. Along the way, we will train your student in the strategies that make one more productive and effective, developing the mental capacity for executive function in your child. Our goal for your child is independence through interdependence.

Motivational Coaching

Included with all Burst coaching but can be contracted separately

Good coaches know that motivation through carrots and sticks only goes so far. The art of coaching is to help the student, athlete, or employee experience motivation which comes from within. We call that Flow, that point at which one’s hard work begets satisfaction—a serotonin uptake in the brain—which propels more hard work. When an individual finds himself/herself in a flow state, we get lost in the activity. This is possible, and we help your student learn to experience it. Our coaches are trained in brain-research that supports long-term motivation, and we know how to equip young people to be mindful of their own motivators.

Homework Club

Monthly packages as low as $10/hour

Homework time can be the most stressful time of day for students and parents. We know you have tried strategies of timers, bribes, and maybe even threats to get your student through the daily grind of the H-word. We provide a quiet, yet stimulating environment in which your student is able to work effectively. We support “deep practice” techniques that can increase learning at a rate up to 10 times that of the typical homework experience. You know, the wandering mind, the getting up to get a snack (5 times), the claims of, “I work better with my music playing,” and all the other distractions that turn 20 minutes of homework into a two-hour battle. Let us help bring familial harmony with BurstTutors Homework Club.
